Flexible strategies
Another key principle of personalised learning is the flexibility of students’ choosing their learning path. Flexible pathways help engage all learners in the learning process. As we would want to celebrate students' interests in learning, allowing learners to take control of their learning can make a difference in their motivation to learn. Having said that, this may not be as easy as the theory proposes. So, teachers can let students take the directions that they want to take, but teachers are there to give them support and feedback on how they are taking this journey. These flexibilities may be present in some classes where students have more choice and voice in developing their key understanding. Some of our current pedagogies such as inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, service learning, etc resonate with this approach. However, the impact would widely depend on how teachers practically use these pedagogical strategies by providing students more voice and choice. For example, if teachers give students various options and allow them to choose how they want to learn, they will be more engaged with their learning and will have a better comprehension of the material. Having more voice and choice will eventually help build the student’s confidence, which can lead to improved academic performance.
Teachers may encounter numerous challenges tailoring learning to learner interests as the curriculum may be in the way of providing that flexibility. The curriculum is often designed to meet certain rigid standards or objectives, which can make it difficult for teachers to adjust the lesson to a learner’s specific interests. Additionally, there are often time constraints that limit the amount of time teachers have to customize the learning experience. However, if the curriculum is too rigid, it can limit the teacher’s ability to be creative and responsive to the needs of individual students. Thus, it is important to find a careful balance between meeting standards and allowing flexibility in the classroom. The design of the Australian curriculum indeed facilitates more autonomy for teachers and students to select their key learning areas.
